Insect Classification

This workshop discusses the anatomy, behaviour, reproduction, metamorphosis and ecology of insects and explains how these factors contribute to their enormous success and diversity.  Students are introduced to the different orders of insects and learn how they differ in their ecology and appearance.

Students will use a specially designed dichotomous key to classify provided insect specimens into various orders, giving them the opportunity to work with some unique Australian insects.  The school will be provided with their choice of a printed publication on insect classification, or an interactive computer based classification key.  This is a fun, hands-on workshop that illustrates the use of dichotomous keys in science and introduces key concepts and terminology for the classification of organisms.
